Biostructures 2022, 30cm x 30cm x 30cm, Jesmonite
Works made in collaborations with Tenebrio Molitor. This series was developed in collaboration with the Tenebrio Molitor species, whose remarkable ability to digest polystyrene challenges our assumptions about waste and biodegradation. Studies have shown that mealworms can safely consume polystyrene and convert it into compostable material, revealing an extraordinary potential for sustainable and regenerative practice. My interest lies not only in this ecological possibility but also in the sculptural beauty generated through the process.
Over several months, I allowed mealworms to tunnel through blocks of polystyrene, carving intricate networks of chambers and pathways. Once their catacombs were complete, the worms were extracted and the voids they created were cast in Jesmonite. The resulting forms are fossils of labour, collaboration and biological alchemy. These sculptures function as both research and artwork, opening the door to collaboration with a more-than-human world in both artistic and societal development.
